Morocco defeated Nigeria on penalties after a fiercely contested match ended goalless in regulation and extra time, sealing a dramatic victory in their knockout clash on Tuesday.
Both sides produced a cagey performance, with few clear-cut chances across 120 minutes as disciplined defending and resilient goalkeeping kept the scoreline blank. Nigeria pressed for a breakthrough, creating sporadic openings through quick counterattacks, but were repeatedly denied by Morocco’s organised backline.
Morocco, for their part, enjoyed spells of possession and came close late in extra time, only to be thwarted by Nigeria’s goalkeeper, who made a series of crucial saves to keep the Super Eagles in the contest.
The deadlock forced the match into a penalty shootout, where Morocco held their nerve. The North Africans converted their kicks with confidence, while Nigeria missed two spot-kicks, handing Morocco a decisive edge.
The victory sends Morocco through to the next round, while Nigeria bow out after a valiant display that ultimately fell short in the lottery of penalties.
Reacting after the match, Morocco’s coach praised his players’ composure and discipline, describing the win as “a reward for belief and teamwork,” while Nigeria’s camp lamented missed opportunities but commended the players’ fighting spirit.
